Paul is a Legal Director based in the Manchester office within Clyde & Co’s top-ranking personal injury defendant team.  He specialises in high value employers’ liability, public liability, and road traffic accident claims, advising on policy, multi-party actions and complex liability disputes. 

Paul has a particular interest in claims involving the Landlord and Tenant Act, the Defective Premises Act, Japanese Knotweed, and Occupiers Liability claims.  He has been involved with many successful defences of claims for housing associations and local authorities. 

Paul prides himself on working closely with both insurer and insured giving straightforward and pragmatic advice.  He provides defensibility training to corporate clients to improve systems and claims investigations and has an extensive experience in the housing market and successfully running liability disputed claims to trial, often requiring exhaustive investigations with the insured and input from experts.

His work encompasses serious injury and psychological conditions including chronic pain, and fatal accidents.

Experience
  • Led the defence for the Respondent in the leading case of Lafferty v Newark and Sherwood DC [2016] HLR 13.
  • Seconded to a major insurer giving a unique insight into the demands and needs of the claims team.
  • Successfully defended a GBP £500,000 claim arising from a road traffic accident – with the claim being dismissed on the grounds of fundamental dishonesty and the Claimant subsequently receiving a committal sentence. 
  • Defence at trial of a claim involving an elderly tenant who fell through her bedroom floor sustaining serious injury.
  • Advising in relation to armed robbery and assault cases for retailers. 
  • Assisted with claims made by seven claimants suffering catastrophic injuries following a coach crash in Morocco.
  • Providing regular training to corporate clients, brokers and risk teams, including tailored case studies and workshops.
